PM Modi in Lakshadweep: During his visit to Lakshadweep, Modi will inaugurate development projects worth more than Rs 1,150 crore and dedicate them to the nation. According to an official statement, in a transformative move, the Prime Minister had resolved to address the challenge of slow internet speeds in Lakshadweep by launching the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI-SOFC) project and launched it in August 2020. An announcement on this was made in the Independence Day speech from the fort.

What will be the benefit?

The statement said that this project has now been completed and it will be inaugurated by Modi. The statement said that this will increase the internet speed by more than 100 times (from 1.7 Gbps to 200 Gbps). For the first time, Lakshadweep will be connected through submarine optic fiber cable (OFC). According to the statement, Modi will also dedicate to the nation the ‘Low Temperature Thermal Desalination Plant’ in Kadmat, which will produce 1.5 lakh liters of clean drinking water every day. He will also dedicate to the nation Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) to all households in Agati and Minicoy Islands.

‘Lakshadweep’s first battery supported solar power project’

According to the statement, other projects also include the solar power plant at Kavaratti, which is Lakshadweep’s first battery-supported solar power project. This also includes laying the foundation stone for renovation of the primary health care facility at Kalpeni, construction of five model Anganwadi Centers (Nand Ghars) in five islands – Androth, Chetlat, Kadmat, Agati and Minicoy. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that in the last 10 years of his government, many development projects have been completed in the Lakshadweep Islands and the Center is committed to the progress of the islands.

Addressed the public meeting after reaching the airport

PM Modi addressed a public meeting immediately after reaching Agati airport here. During his address, Modi mentioned the immense potential present in Lakshadweep and alleged that the islands faced neglect for many years after independence. He said, “The Union Territory is full of many possibilities, but for a long time after independence, not much attention was paid to the infrastructure of Lakshadweep.”

Mention of weak port infrastructure

He noted the weak port infrastructure, noting that shipping is the lifeline of the islands. He said that this applies to education, health and even petrol and diesel. Modi said, “Even though shipping is the lifeline of the archipelago, the port infrastructure is weak. Be it health, education, or even petrol and diesel, we faced a lot of problems. All these challenges are being resolved by our government. He said that the government has now seriously taken up the task of developing Lakshadweep. He expressed positive expectations about the recently opened ice plant in Agati, stressing that it will pave the way for expanding the possibilities of seafood processing on the island.
