Karnataka Assembly Election 2023: The ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana has announced its support to the Janata Dal (Secular) in the Karnataka Assembly elections and has decided not to field any candidate in the upcoming elections to be held on May 10. BRS has called JD(S) a friendly party. Earlier the name of BRS was TRS (Telangana Rashtra Samithi). The party had changed its name in December last year with the aim of entering national politics. The party was of the view that he should contest the assembly elections in Karnataka as well.

Not enough time to plan for candidates

However, it has decided not to field a candidate in the assembly polls as the JD(S) is its friend and does not have enough time to plan for the election, BRS sources said today. Pointing to efforts being made by the BRS to gain a foothold in neighboring Maharashtra, the sources said the party was not in favor of contesting elections without adequate preparation and planning.

Thoughts on campaigning in support of candidates

BRS supremo and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has so far addressed two rallies in Maharashtra’s Nanded region and is scheduled to address a public meeting in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad) on April 24. Chief Minister Rao is popularly known as KCR. Sources said that if a request comes from the JD(S), KCR may consider campaigning in support of its candidates. However, no decision has been taken in this regard, he said.

Division of anti-BJP votes

Sources said that behind the decision not to contest elections in Karnataka, there is also a thinking that its campaign there can lead to division of anti-BJP votes and BJP can benefit from it. Former Karnataka Chief Minister and JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy had earlier participated in programs to change the name of TRS to BRS in Hyderabad. The process of filing nominations for the elections to be held in Karnataka on May 10 ended yesterday.
