Jharkhand: School children falling prey to e-cigarettes and brown sugar

Ranchi, Manoj Singh: The trend of e-cigarettes and brown sugar is increasing rapidly among the children of private schools of the capital. Many such cases will be found in many private schools and intersections of the city. E-cigarettes are becoming easily available to school children. Children who are weak in studies are being victimized. Groups of teenagers are being targeted to make them drink brown sugar. On any special occasion it is started by the peddler’s men. After getting addicted, their business starts. In a group of teenagers, only one or two boys know where to find brown sugar. Delivery is done upon ordering over phone. Money is taken for online payment. Addicted youth say that they do not know who is selling. Whenever there is a need, a particular boy of the group is contacted.

Case-1

E-cigarettes have been seized from some children in a private school on Kanke Road. The families of the children have been warned about this. This equipment was provided to the children by some youth of the urban area. For the initial days it was given without money. Now money is being demanded from children. E-cigarette is a device which is filled with intoxicating liquid. It looks like an electronic gadget. The school has expelled the accused children from the school.

Case-2

Ranchi The 14-year-old teenager is undergoing treatment at the Institute of Neuro Psychiatry and Allied Sciences (Rinpas). He is addicted to brown sugar. His family told the doctors that he had brought this addiction from school. Earlier everything was fine. Later he started living alone. Used to insist on money. The school student told the doctors that he got everything around the school. It is easily available at almost all the intersections in the city.

Accused arrested with brown sugar within three months

  • 01 September: Doranda police arrested three accused with 39 packets of brown sugar.

  • September 10: Lower Bazar police arrested two accused with 17 packets of brown sugar.

  • September 14: Woman arrested from Argora police station area with 10 pods of brown sugar, cough syrup and other intoxicants.

  • 01 October: Pundag OP police arrested a woman with 50 bags of brown sugar.

  • 03 October: Pundag police arrested a person with five grams of brown sugar.

  • November 18: Kotwali police from Kishoreganj arrested two people with 11 grams of brown sugar.
