Bihar: One percent MNREGA workers did not get 100 days of work

Bihar: Manoj Kumar, Patna. Women’s participation in MNREGA has decreased in the last financial year 2023-24. The number of disabled people has also reduced. The number of SC-ST families has increased. But, there is a slight increase in it. The average number of working days for a family is less than one percent this year too. For the last five years, less than one percent of the families got work for 100 days. In the financial year 2023-24, only 0.69 percent families worked for 100 days. This year, out of 47 lakh 46 thousand 59, only 32578 worked for 100 days. In 2022-23, out of 50 lakh 14 thousand 363, 39 thousand 678 got work for 100 days. This is 0.79 percent of the total number. In the year 2021-22, out of 47 lakh 75 thousand 783, only 21975 got 100 days of work. This is 0.46 percent of the total number.

Interest of women and disabled people decreased

In the financial year 2022-23, the percentage of women working in MNREGA was 56.19. Whereas in the financial year 2023-24 it decreased to 54.28. There has been a decrease of about two percent. Women participation was 53.19 percent in 2021-22, 54.63 percent in 2020-21. A total of 8971 disabled people got jobs in the financial year 2023-24. Whereas in the previous year, 9281 disabled people had worked. In the year 2021-22, 8548 disabled people worked. In the year 2023-24, 20.85 percent SC-ST families worked in MNREGA. In the previous year their number was only 19.22 percent.

Decreased interest due to low and late wages

MNREGA workers have not received wages since almost January this year. MNREGA wages in the state have been increased to Rs 245 this year. Only Rs 57 have been increased in the last four years. MNREGA laborer Ram Awadhesh Prasad from Itadhi in Buxar district said that the wages in MNREGA are very low. Even after working, one has to look for money. Vishnu Kumar of Rajapur village of Bhojpur told that due to low wages in MNREGA, he stopped working.
