Sunil Kumar was made the minister of Prohibition and Registration Department in Nitish government. Even when there was a political upheaval in Bihar and the Grand Alliance government was formed in the state, Sunil Kumar still had the prohibition department. After the formation of the new NDA government in the state, when he was made a minister for the third time, this time he has been given the responsibility of the education department.
