Ram Charit Manas: In Avadhpuri, the name of Raghukul Shiromani King Dasharatha is famous in the Vedas. King Dasharatha was a great man of religion and a storehouse of virtues and knowledge. King Dashrath had devotion in his heart for the Lord who wields the bow of Sharng, and his intellect was also focused on him. His favorite queens like Kausalya etc. were all of pious conduct. She was very polite and obeyed her husband. Once the king felt very guilty that he did not have a son. The king went to the Guru’s house and bowed at his feet and told him all his sorrows and happiness. Guru Vasishtha ji explained to him and said that you will have four sons, who will be famous in all the three worlds and will overcome the fear of the devotees. Then Vashishtha ji called sage Shringi and asked him to perform the Yagya for the auspicious son Kameshti. After the sage offered offerings with devotion, Agnidev appeared with kheer in his hand and said to Dasharatha, whatever Vashishtha had thought in his heart, all your work has been accomplished. Hey king! Now go and divide this kheer into portions as per your choice.
After explaining, Agnidev disappeared. The king became engrossed in ecstasy, there was no joy in his heart. At the same time the king called his beloved wives. Kausalya etc. all the queens came there. The king gave half of it to Kausalya and divided the remaining half into two parts. The king gave one part of this to Kaikeyi. The remainder was then divided into two parts and the king placed them on the hands of Kausalya and Kaikeyi, that is, after taking their permission, gave them to Sumitra. In this way all the women became pregnant. She became very happy in her heart. He got great happiness. From the day Shri Hari came into the womb, happiness and wealth spread in all the worlds. All the queens who were blessed with grace, modesty and brilliance were adorned in the palace.
Some time passed and the occasion came in which the Lord was to appear. Yoga, ascendant, planet, day and date all became favourable. Everything inanimate and animate were filled with joy. It was the holy month of Chaitra, it was Navami Tithi. It was Shukla Paksha and God’s favorite Abhijit Muhurta. It was the afternoon time. It was neither very cold nor sunny. That holy time was going to give peace to all the worlds. A cool, slow and fragrant wind was blowing. The gods were happy and the saints had great enthusiasm. The forests were in bloom, the mountain ranges were sparkling with gems and all the rivers were flowing with nectar. When Lord Brahma learned about the opportunity of God’s appearance, he and all the gods left the plane decorated. The clear sky was filled with groups of gods.
The drums started beating loudly in the sky. The snakes, sages and gods started praising and offering their gifts in various ways. The groups of gods prayed and went to their respective worlds. Lord Jagdadhar, who gives peace to all the worlds, appeared. The merciful Lord, who has mercy on the downtrodden and is well-wisher of Kausalyaji, appeared. The mother was filled with joy thinking of his wonderful form which defeated the minds of the sages. It was a black body like a cloud that was pleasing to the eyes. All four arms had their own special weapons. Was wearing jewelery and garland. Had big eyes. In this way the Lord who killed the ocean of beauty and the demon Khar appeared. Mother started saying with folded hands – O Anant! How should I praise you? Vedas and Puranas tell you that you are beyond illusion, qualities and knowledge and are immeasurable. Lord Lakshmipati, who loves devotees and is praised by the scriptures and saints as the ocean of kindness and happiness, the abode of all virtues, has appeared for my welfare.
King Dashrath ji seemed to be immersed in Brahmananda after hearing the birth of his son. There is immense love in the mind, the body became thrilled. They want to wake up by giving patience to the mind that is impatient in joy and by taking care of the body that is relaxed in love. The king’s mind became filled with great joy thinking that the Lord, whose name brings good health, has come to my house. Guru Vasisthaji was called. He came to the royal gate along with the Brahmins. He went and saw the unique child, who is the embodiment of form and whose qualities cannot be exhausted by words. Then the king performed all the caste rituals etc. and donated gold, cows, clothes and gems to the Brahmins. The king gave generous donations to everyone. The one who found it also did not keep it and squandered it. Auspicious congratulatory songs started playing in every house.
Kaikeyi and Sumitra also gave birth to beautiful sons. Even Saraswati and Sheshji, the king of snakes, cannot describe that happiness, wealth, time and society. Avadhpuri is becoming beautiful in such a way, as if the night has come to meet the Lord and after seeing the sun, it seems as if it has shrank in the mind, but still after thinking in the mind, it is as if it has remained like evening. Seeing this prodigy, even the sun forgot his trick. One month passed there i.e. one day of the month. No one knows this secret. Surya stopped there along with his chariot, then how would the night be. Suryadev walked praising Lord Shri Ram. Seeing this festival, the gods, sages and snakes went to their respective homes appreciating their good fortune. On that occasion, whoever came and whatever he liked, the king gave him whatever he liked. The king satisfied everyone’s heart by giving them elephants, chariots, horses, gold, cows, diamonds and various clothes.

Thus a few days passed. It doesn’t seem like day and night are passing. Then after knowing the time of naming ceremony, the king called the wise sage Shri Vashishtha ji. After worshiping the sage, the king said – O sage! Name the thoughts you have in your mind. The sage said – O king! They have many unique names, still I will say them according to my wisdom. He who is the ocean of happiness and the zodiac sign of happiness, a single particle of which makes all three worlds happy, his name is ‘Ram’, who is the abode of happiness and the giver of peace to all the worlds. Who sustain the world. The name of your second son will be ‘Bharat’. The one whose mere remembrance destroys the enemy, has the famous name ‘Shatrughan’ in the Vedas and the one who is the abode of auspicious signs, beloved of Shri Ram and the foundation of the entire world, Guru Vasistha ji gave him such a great name as ‘Lakshman’. Guruji kept these names after thinking in his heart and said, O King! Your four sons are the elements of the Vedas.
