WhatsApp Ban: Meta-owned WhatsApp banned 71.1 lakh accounts in September in compliance with information technology (IT) rules. According to India’s monthly report released by the popular messaging app, 25.7 lakh of these accounts were actively banned before any reports from users. Indian accounts are identified with the country code ‘+91’.
According to the report, 71,11,000 WhatsApp accounts were banned between September 1 and 30, 2023. The ‘User Safety Report’ contains details of user complaints and actions taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own preventive actions to deal with abuse on the platform. According to the report, between September 1 and 30, the forum received six orders from the Complaints Appellate Committee and all were complied with.
WhatsApp had banned 74 lakh accounts in August and out of them, 35 lakh accounts were actively banned. WhatsApp’s latest report said it received reports from 10,442 users in account support (1,031), ban appeals (7,396), other support (1,518), product support (370) and other areas. During this period, action was taken on 85 accounts based on the report.
According to WhatsApp, ‘Accounts Actioned’ refers to reports where it took remedial action based on the report. Taking action means either banning an account or restoring an account already banned as a result of a complaint.
It was said in the report that WhatsApp responds to all the complaints received. Except in cases where the complaint is considered to be a repetition of a previous complaint.
