The new variant of Corona has again increased the tension in the country. It is being told that the Union Minister is going to review the preparedness of health facilities and services in view of the recent increase in cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe respiratory illness (SARI), including Covid-19, in some states. Oxygen, hospital beds, ventilators, medicines, diagnostics and other arrangements and monitoring measures can also be discussed.

The JN.1 sub-variant is a new sub-variant of BA.2.86 (also known as Pirola). It is itself an off-shoot of the rapidly spreading Omicron variant. Experts have warned that it is more immune resistant. It was identified as a variant of interest (VOI) by WHO scientists in November.
