WFI Election: Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh claims, 22 state units participated in his meeting

Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) outgoing president of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh The RSS has claimed that 22 out of 25 state units attended a meeting called by them on Sunday. He said that for the federation elections on August 12, their candidates for various posts would be announced on July 31. The last date for filing nominations is till Monday. BJP MP Brij Bhushan had called this meeting in a five-star hotel in Delhi.

Support of 22 out of 25 state units

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said, ‘Out of 25 state units associated with WFI, 22 participated in the meeting. (Our) candidates will be announced on Monday. The country’s top six wrestlers, including Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, leveled allegations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan. He is ineligible to contest the election as he has completed 12 years as the head of the federation, which is the maximum period a post can be allowed to hold under the National Sports Code.

Brijbhushan’s son-in-law will not file nomination

A state unit member who attended the meeting said on condition of anonymity that the son-in-law of the BJP leader (who is being seen as Brij Bhushan’s successor at the WFI top post and a representative of Bihar in the WFI elections on August 12) ) will not contest for this top post. The state unit’s member secretary said, “He (Vishal) has declared his incapacity to contest the election as he is very busy and even if he is elected to the post, he will not be able to do justice to the post.” He said, ‘But he will give his vote.’

Brij Bhushan’s son will not contest elections

Brij Bhushan’s son Karan is also not a part of the voting list for the elections as Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had promised the wrestlers protesting at Jantar Mantar that the BJP leader’s family will not contest the election. However, Brij Bhushan’s candidates may face challenge from rival candidates and according to reports, the rival faction also held its meeting at a different place in the national capital. According to reports, the state units of Assam, Odisha and Himachal Pradesh participated in this meeting but this could not be independently confirmed.

There may be another meeting before nomination

Assam was recently given voting rights by an ad-hoc panel of the IOA. Those who may be in the running from the rival faction are Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) secretary Prem Chand Lachab (representative of Gujarat) and Anita Sheoran (in the sexual harassment case against Brij Bhushan), who is on the list to represent Odisha. a witness). Another source close to the BJP MP’s camp said, “There will be another meeting on Monday before filing nominations at Olympic Bhavan which will be chaired by Brij Bhushan.”

No candidate from Punjab Union

Punjab union secretary Ranbir Kundu said neither he himself nor its president, Asian Games gold medalist wrestler Kartar Singh, wanted to occupy important positions. He said, ‘Brij Bhushan spoke to the head of each state unit separately so that the candidates could be agreed upon. We are all unanimously in favor of a candidate who can take the game forward. Kartar was earlier the secretary of WFI. The day-to-day activities of the WFI are handled by an ad-hoc committee constituted by the Indian Olympic Association, headed by Bhupinder Singh Bajwa, president of the Wushu Federation of India.

Decision on date of trials for World Championship after August 1

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA)-appointed ad-hoc committee for wrestling is likely to announce the date for conducting trials for the World Championships between August 1 and 3 as there is clarity on the nomination numbers for the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections. Will happen Gyan Singh, a member of the ad-hoc committee, said that the last date for filing nominations is August 31, so by August 1, we will know how many candidates are fighting for the respective posts. If there is only one candidate for each post, I think that the command of WFI will be handed over to the new officers by August 1.

Election will be held on August 12

Gyan Singh said, ‘If there is more than one nomination for each post, the information about the selected member will be available only till August 12, when the WFI elections are scheduled.’ In such a situation, the ad-hoc committee will decide on the date of trials for the World Championship before August 3 so that enough time can be given to the wrestlers for training and they can appear for the trials by August 10. The World Championship will be held in Belgrade, Serbia from 16 to 24 September.
