West Bengal: Opposition demands imposition of President’s rule over attack on ED officers

Political turmoil has erupted over the attack on ED officials in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress Demanded imposition of President’s rule in the state, while the ruling Trinamool Congress has accused the central agency officials of instigating the local people. ED had come to raid Shahjahan’s residence in North 24 Parganas district in connection with the investigation of ration distribution scam. Shahjahan is considered close to state minister Jyotipriya Malik, who was arrested for his alleged involvement in the scam. Reacting to the incident, Union Minister of State for Home Nishith Pramanik said, “State governments should provide proper security and other resources to the officers of the central investigating agency, but this has not happened in West Bengal. President’s rule should be implemented in the state soon

Pramanik said, “The Center has taken it seriously and we will also look into why such incidents are happening again and again in West Bengal.” BJP state president Sukant Majumdar has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah requesting immediate NIA investigation into the attack and imposition of President’s rule in the state. Majumdar’s letter also demanded deployment of central paramilitary forces to ensure the integrity of investigation processes by central agencies. Congress President Adhir Ranjan Choudhary also said similar things and alleged that law and order has broken down in Bengal under the rule of Trinamool Congress. He said, we demand that President’s rule should be immediately imposed in West Bengal.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress minister Shashi Panja accused ED officials of provoking the local people, due to which the situation arose.
