West Bengal: BJP delegation to visit violence-hit Sandeshkhali area tomorrow

President of Bharatiya Janata Party JP Nadda has constituted a six-member committee of party MPs which will on Friday visit Sandeshkhali in West Bengal where protests have taken place over allegations of sexual harassment of women by Trinamool Congress supporters. Many women of the area have accused local Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Shaikh and his supporters of land grabbing and sexually harassing them. Last month, the Enforcement Directorate team had gone to raid Shahjahan’s residence in the alleged ration scam, which was attacked by the mob. He is absconding since last month.

According to a statement issued by the BJP, Union Ministers Pratima Bhowmik and Annapurna Devi, MPs Sunita Duggal, Kavita Patidar, Sangeeta Yadav and former DGP of Uttar Pradesh and Rajya Sabha member Brijlal are part of the committee. Party sources said that he will go to Sandeshkhali on Friday. The party said that the incidents of sexual exploitation and violence against women are heart-wrenching. He alleged that the local administration has remained a mute spectator.

The party claimed that law and order has collapsed in the entire state. However, state ruling Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh claimed that false allegations were being made regarding Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district. He said that the police and Trinamool Congress leadership are taking appropriate steps against the accused. Protests continued in Sandeshkhali for the eighth consecutive day on Thursday. A large number of women are on the streets demanding the arrest of Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his alleged ‘gang’.
