West Bengal: 98 tortoises being smuggled from Down Chambal Express train recovered, RPF handed over to Forest Department

Burdwan/Panagarh, Mukesh Tiwari: After search in the general bogie of Down Chambal Express train stopped at Burdwan railway station in West Bengal. Burdwan RPF (Burdwan RPF, Has recovered about 98 live turtles collected in three bags. RPF is also shocked by the recovery of such a large number of turtles. It is said that no smuggler has been arrested in this incident. Burdwan RPF handed over all the tortoises to Burdwan Ramna Bagan Forest Department.

According to RPF sources, when the Down Chambal Express train reached the platform at Burdwan railway station on Wednesday morning, RPF personnel started searching in the general bogie. There was suspicion after seeing two pittu bags and a nylon bag under the seat of the said bogie. Upon investigation, none of the passengers claimed the said bag as their own. After this, when the bags were opened, live turtles were present in all of them.

After this, RPF confiscated all the bags and took them off the train. After the paperwork, all the turtles have been handed over to the Forest Department. Forest Department official said that RPF has rescued 98 tortoises which were recovered from the train and were being smuggled. We will keep the said turtles in Ramana Bagan garden for observation for a few days. After this, all these turtles will be released in different reservoirs and rivers. It is noteworthy that a continuous campaign is being run by RPF so that smuggling in trains can be stopped.
