Dry weather conditions may prevail in Delhi for a long time, due to which the mercury may reach 40 degree Celsius in many areas of the national capital in the coming week. Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 34.9 degrees on Monday, which is the highest temperature so far this year. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that April to June may see above-normal temperatures and an unusually high number of heatwave days.

Heat wave conditions in late April

Kuldeep Srivastava, head of IMD’s regional center, said that there is a forecast of dry weather in Delhi for at least a week. In the absence of western disturbance, the maximum temperature is expected to reach 38 degrees on April 15-16. The meteorologist told that after April 17, the temperature in many areas of the national capital may reach 40 degrees, but there does not seem to be a ‘fear of heat wave at the moment’. Mahesh Palawat, vice-president of Skymet, told that there is no possibility of pre-monsoon activity in the city for the next 10 days, due to which the temperature may rise. Heat wave-like conditions are likely to occur in the end of April.

In Kerala, there may be moderate rain at 12 places with light rain. The possibility of thunder has been expressed at one or two places in western Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir. On the other hand, except for Northeast India, the maximum temperature is expected to increase gradually in most parts of the country. However, heat wave conditions are not expected for at least the next 2 to 3 days.

Chances of less rain than normal in India, chances of drought

Private forecasting agency Skymet Weather on Monday said that India is likely to receive below normal monsoon rains this year and there is a 20 per cent chance of drought due to the end of La Nina conditions and the possibility of El Nino taking effect. After four consecutive years of normal and above normal rainfall during the monsoon season, the forecast is a matter of concern for the agriculture sector. The agricultural sector depends heavily on monsoon rains for crop production.
