WB News: Reached hospital for MRI, knee got burnt despite pressing SOS button.

The West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission (WBCERC) has directed Woodlands Hospital to pay a compensation of Rs 50,000 to the family of a patient. The Commission has found negligence on the part of the hospital in its investigation. Patient Akshar Gupta suffered a leg injury while playing football. When he was taken to the hospital, the orthopedic surgeon asked for an MRI of his knee. As soon as the patient was taken for the MRI, he gave an SOS button and told him to press it if there was any problem during the examination. It was alleged that when the patient raised the alarm three times, the health worker conducting the MRI said that the procedure would be completed soon.

The commission also took action against the private hospital which blocked the Swasthya Sathi card.

But after the MRI, it was found that a part of his knee had been burnt due to extreme heat. The health workers of the hospital requested the patient to be admitted to the emergency ward. The family refused. After this, a complaint was lodged in WBCERC on behalf of the family members. The Commission had held the first hearing of this case before the puja. On Thursday, the Commission directed to pay compensation to Woodlands Hospital. It has also been instructed that if the said patient comes to the hospital, he will have to be treated free of cost. Chairman of West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission and former Justice Asim Kumar Banerjee gave this information. He gave this information in the virtual press conference organized by the Commission.

Swasthya Sathi card blocked by hospital, instructions to return treatment expenses

In another case, WBCERC has directed Kolkata Medical Center in Narkeldanga to refund Rs 1,93,000 to the family members of a patient. In this matter, a complaint was made to the Commission by a person named Sandeep Das. In this regard, it was told by the Commission that Sandeep had admitted his family to the hospital for orthopedic surgery. The hospital had blocked the Swasthya Sathi card. After this the patient was treated as a cash patient. Rs 1,93,000 was recovered from the patient’s family as treatment expenses. WBCERC directed the hospital to pay the said amount in four installments.
