WB: Minister Nishith Pramanik gets protection from Supreme Court, Bengal Police cannot take punitive action

Union Minister of State for Home in Supreme Court 2018 attempt to murder case Nisith Pramanik West Bengal Police has been ordered on Friday not to take any punitive action against him. A bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal heard his plea challenging the January 4 order of the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court. Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench had refused to grant him anticipatory bail in the case.

A case of attempt to murder was registered against Pramanik at Dinhata police station in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district in 2018, when a group of people opened fire on Trinamool Congress workers. One person was injured in the firing. Pramanik was earlier in the Trinamool Congress and he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in February 2019. He has denied the charge of inciting violence. He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Cooch Behar on a BJP ticket and won the election.
