State Health Services Director Professor Dr. Siddharth Niyogi said, “West Bengal is the only state in the country where all types of treatment including heart and brain stroke surgery are done in government hospitals for just two rupees. The new rules will be implemented in the interest of the patients of the state. The government will take decisions only after discussing all the issues.

Services provided to 75 percent patients in government hospitals

Every year patients from Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and even Myanmar come to West Bengal for treatment. SSKM (PG), NRS, RG Kar, Kolkata Medical College and other sub division hospitals are in bad condition. Last year, about 75 percent of the patients in the state were provided services in government hospitals. But due to shortage of beds, a large number of patients have been forced to be referred to other hospitals.

Patients from neighboring countries also come to government hospitals for treatment.

Dr. Sudipta Roy, Chairman of the Patient Welfare Committee of Kolkata Medical College and Hospital and Trinamool MLA, said, “Apart from various states of the country, patients from neighboring countries also come for treatment in the government hospitals here. Due to the experienced doctors and nurses of the state, we are able to treat such a large number of patients. But care also has to be taken that the patients of the state do not face problems.” A health department official said that most of the patients come for treatment in the state from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Odisha.
