Watch: Tilak Verma took amazing catch in debut match, video is becoming increasingly viral on social media

Twenty-year-old batsman Tilak Verma was given a chance to make his debut for India on Thursday. West Indies won the toss and decided to bat first in the first match of the five-match T20 series. Fast bowler Mukesh Kumar made his debut for India in the second Test against the same opposition last month and then played in the three-match ODI series. He also earned his first T20 International cap.

Tilak Verma came out to bat at number four for India. He played an important inning of 39 runs. Tilak hit two fours and three sixes in his 22-ball innings. His strike rate was 177.27. In an attempt to play a big shot off the ball of Romaria Shepherd, he was caught by Shimron Hetmyer. Tilak was looking in excellent form. India chose three spinners for the match at the Brian Lara Stadium, which included Akshar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal.

The visitors had won the series 1–0 in the last two Test matches before defeating the West Indies 2–1 in the ODIs. In today’s match, West Indies scored 149 runs for six wickets in the first T20 International cricket match against India due to the excellent innings of Captain Rovman Powell and Nicholas Pooran. Due to Powell’s innings, the West Indies team was able to add 54 runs in the last six overs. For India, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal took 24 while fast bowler Arshdeep Singh took two wickets for 31 runs. Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav and captain Hardik Pandya bowled economically, taking one wicket each for 20 and 27 runs respectively in four overs. After winning the toss, Brendan King got West Indies off to bat and got off to a good start. He hit two consecutive fours in the second over of Mukesh Kumar’s innings after opening the account with a four off Arshdeep. King welcomed left-arm spinner Akshar Patel with a six.

Chahal took two wickets in one over

Chahal dealt a double blow to West Indies in the fifth over of the innings by dismissing King and second opener Kyle Myers (01) within three balls. Chahal lbw both the batsmen. King scored 28 runs. Puran hit Chahal for a four and a six as soon as he came, while in the next over Akshar also hit fours and sixes on consecutive balls. West Indies scored 54 runs for two wickets in the power play. Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav gave West Indies the third blow by getting Johnson Charles (03) caught by debutant Tilak Verma.

Indian bowlers curbed the run rate in the middle overs. West Indies batsmen had to wait till the 11th over after the power play for the boundary. Powell ended the boundary drought with a four on Pandya. Powell waved the ball in the air in an attempt to play a big shot on Kuldeep’s ball but Shubman failed to catch his catch while running from Gill Point. Pooran, however, was caught by Verma at the boundary in an attempt to play a big shot off Pandya’s ball. He hit two fours and two sixes while facing 34 balls.

West Indies scored 100 runs in the 15th over

Shimron Hetmyer completed the team’s century in the 15th over with fours on Pandya. Powell got a second life in the same over of Pandya when Chahal dropped his easy catch in the covers. Taking advantage of this, Powell took the very next ball to the audience for six runs. In the next over, Powell also hit a straight six over Chahal and then hit fours and sixes off Arshdeep’s consecutive balls. Arshdeep gave a double blow to the West Indies by dismissing Hetmyer and Powell in the 19th over. In an attempt to play a big shot, Hetmyer handed over a catch to Akshar, while Powell caught Suryakumar on the log. India gave debut opportunity to batsman Tilak and Mukesh. Mukesh made his debut in all three formats of the game on the current tour.
