Uttarakhand News: In a program organized at Chief Sevak Sadan of Uttarakhand, UCC Committee Chairperson Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai along with the members of the draft committee submitted the UCC draft report to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The first state in the country to adopt UCC
The UCC will provide a legal framework for uniform marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance laws for all citizens in the state irrespective of their religion. If this is implemented, Uttarakhand will become the first state in the country to adopt UCC after independence. UCC has been in force in Goa since the days of Portuguese rule. A four-day special session of the Uttarakhand Assembly has been called from February 5 to pass a bill on UCC. The draft will also be discussed in the state cabinet before presenting it as a bill in the Assembly.

One of the major promises made by BJP to the public
Bringing the bill on UCC was one of the major promises made by the BJP to the public in the 2022 assembly elections. BJP had created history by registering victory for the second consecutive time in Uttarakhand, which came into existence in the year 2000 and the Chief Minister said that the people have given their blessings to this resolve expressed by him. In the first meeting of the Cabinet immediately after the formation of the government in March 2022, the formation of an expert committee to prepare the draft of the UCC was approved, later a committee was formed under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. .
A total of four extensions were also given to the committee
Apart from Justice Desai (retired), Justice Pramod Kohli (retired), social worker Manu Gaur, former Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand Shatrughan Singh and Vice Chancellor of Doon University Surekha Dangwal are also included in this committee. The committee received 2.33 lakh written suggestions during its tenure of about two years and in its 60 meetings the members interacted with about sixty thousand people.
