Uttarakhand accident: Workers trapped in the tunnel will soon come out, digging continues by hand, one meter more pipe pushed inside

Silkyara Tunnel Accident: To save 41 workers trapped in the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi, along with vertical drilling, direct digging will also be started by hand. This information has been given by the National Disaster Management Authority today i.e. on Monday. Workers are stuck at Silkyara Tunnel for the last 16 days. The rescue operation is going on continuously, but the workers have not been taken out of the tunnel yet. Earlier, digging was being done with auger machine, but due to breakdown of the machine, now digging is being done by hand also. It is being told that digging was completed with one meter of hand, the pipe has been pushed inside up to 1 meter.

Digging is also being done by hand

It is noteworthy that 46.8 meters straight excavation was done with the auger machine, but after that, further excavation could not be done due to the blade of this machine being broken. The rescue team took the help of plasma machine to remove the broken blade of the auger machine. While giving updated information about the excavation, the rescue team said that digging will now be done by hand instead of machines. In this context, National Disaster Management Authority member Lieutenant General (retired) Syed Ata Hasnain, while talking to the media, said that the broken parts of the auger machine have been removed from the debris. There were some obstacles in removing the broken parts but they have been rectified.

Excavation will be done in rat hole manner
Lieutenant General (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain also said that Indian Army engineers will introduce rat hole mining and hand digging techniques with the help of other technicians. Let us tell you, through rat hole mining, a vertical pit 100 to 400 feet deep is dug. Hasnain said that there will be a team of six members who will work in groups of three. Vertical and horizontal drilling are the two methods that are being focused on at the moment. At the same time, other options like horizontal drilling from the barcot end of the tunnel are also being worked on.

A total of 86 meters of vertical drilling will be done for the rescue of workers trapped in the tunnel. Under this, a 1.2 meter diameter pipe will be inserted vertically from top to bottom of the tunnel. Work on this was started from Sunday as a second option to reach the stranded labourers. SVNL has done about 32 meters of vertical drilling so far. RVNL is working on another pipeline which will be vertical and has been laid up to 75 meters. The estimated depth is approximately 86 meters.
