Transport Department owes Rs 20 crore on 18 thousand vehicles, know how and how much tax defaulters are getting exemption

The Transport Department has outstanding tax of around Rs 20 crore on tax defaulter vehicles. The department is sending notices to vehicle owners for its recovery. Till now, notices have been sent to more than four thousand vehicle owners. Giving big relief to such defaulters, the government has announced Sarvakshama Yojana (OTS). Under this, tax defaulting vehicles have not got exemption in basic tax, but 70 percent exemption has been given on the amount of fine.

DTO Sushil Kumar said that the process of sending notices to tax defaulter vehicle owners is underway. Further action will be taken after the department issues instructions regarding the Sarvkshama Scheme. At present, the scheme of exemption in tax and penalty has been started for vehicle owners who scrap 15 year old vehicles. A notice related to this has been put up in the office.

How and how much discount will be given

70 percent relaxation in the amount of fine means that the tax defaulter vehicle owner is fined Rs 1 lakh in addition to the basic tax, i.e. tax of Rs 1 lakh and fine of Rs 1 lakh. So the vehicle owner will have to pay Rs 1 lakh instead of Rs 2 lakh as basic tax and penalty, and instead of Rs 1 lakh, he will have to pay Rs 30 thousand. In this they will get 70 percent discount. Whereas tractor-trailer defaulters can get free from the dues by depositing a lump sum of Rs 30 thousand. After the notification is issued in this regard, tax defaulter vehicle owners will get the benefit.

Separate discount on scrap vehicles

A one-time waiver of dues has been provided to vehicles that are scrapped above 15 years of age. In this, all types of first dues on government vehicles have been completely waived off. Whereas for non-transport vehicles, 90 percent exemption in tax and 100 percent exemption in penalty has been provided. At the same time, 90 percent exemption has been provided in transport vehicle tax and 100 percent exemption in fine. A notice in this regard has been pasted at the tax counter. Till now not a single vehicle owner has reached the District Transport Office to avail the benefits of this scheme.
