Smuggler was arrested along with RPF

Officials of the RPF Kahalgaon post said that the forest department received information that a young man was waiting for the train standing at the station carrying tortoise shell in two bags at the Kahalgaon platform. Foresters of Kahalgaon Forest Department reached there along with RPF and caught the smuggler. A red colored trolley bag and a small bag filled with tortoise shell were found from him, which weighs about 20 kg. One of his companions, Badal Sahni, managed to escape. While doing paperwork, the RPF handed over the smuggler Pawan Sahni of Kahalgaon Kaggitola along with both the bags to the Forest Department for further action. Sub-Inspector SN Singh, Havaldar Laldev Bhagat along with other personnel of RPF and Forest Department were involved in the raid.

Delivered to Malda district of West Bengal

Smuggler tortoise shell is brought to Kahalgaon in its raw state from Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh and Kota in Rajasthan, which is dried well for a few days in Kahalgaon and cut into small pieces and filled in bags by different trains to Kaliachak in Malda district of West Bengal. I am handed over to the agent there. Due to the international border in Kaliachak, smugglers easily send it to Bangladesh.

Smuggling business going on for years

Tell that the business of tortoise shell has been running in the country for decades. Whenever departmental noose is tightened, smugglers adopt new methods. There is good earning in this business. In Kaliachak, the cost of one kg of dried tortoise shell is about six and a half thousand rupees. According to this, the cost of the recovered tortoise shell is about one lakh 30 thousand rupees. The smuggler sends several consignments in a month. It is used in making sexual enhancer and other medicines.
