‘No place for the concept of simultaneous elections’
He said in the letter, ‘In a country where parliamentary governance system has been adopted, there is no place for the concept of simultaneous elections. Such formats of simultaneous elections by the government are against the guarantee of federalism enshrined in the Constitution. On October 18 last year, a letter was written to the Congress President for suggestions on behalf of the committee headed by former President Ramnath Kovind. The Congress President has sent his suggestions on 17 points to the committee.
‘Against the basic structure of the Constitution’
Mallikarjun Kharge said, ‘The government and this committee should have been honest from the very beginning that the efforts they are making are against the basic structure of the Constitution and if simultaneous elections have to be implemented, then there should be adequate provisions in the basic structure of the Constitution. Change will be required.

He said, ‘On behalf of the Congress Party and the people of the country, I humbly request the Chairman of the High Level Committee (Ramnath Kovind) to stop the Central Government from using his personality and the former President of India to destroy the Constitution and parliamentary democracy. Don’t let your position be misused. The Congress President said, ‘The Indian National Congress strongly opposes the idea of ’one nation, one election’. To maintain a prosperous and strong democracy, it is necessary that this entire idea be abandoned.
