West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu said that the state government is not in favor of appointing acting vice-chancellors in universities. The Education Minister’s remarks came three days after Governor CV Anand Bose appointed Professor Buddhadev Sau as the acting Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University (JU). Targeting the Governor, the Education Minister said in the Vidhan Sabha that the files related to the appointment of Vice Chancellors in state-run or state-aided universities are lying in the Governor’s office.

He said, “The recommendations of the search committee constituted by the Higher Education Department are not being considered. The files related to the appointments of Vice-Chancellors are lying like this. The game of putting the ball in each other’s court continues. The action of the Raj Bhavan has created a state of chaos in the universities.” When asked about the appointment of Mr. Sau as the acting Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, the Education Minister said, “We are not in favor of appointing an interim Vice-Chancellor. Are. We want appointment of permanent vice-chancellors in various universities.” Jadavpur University is facing flak over the death of a first-year undergraduate student allegedly after ragging and sexual assault.

Students not taking interest in studying mother tongue: Education Minister

The minister said that emphasis is being laid on teaching mother tongue in government schools. Orientation program is being organized for the children. Emphasis is also being laid on the training of teachers.

A bill will be presented in the Vidhansabha for the formation of education commission.

In response to a question from the BJP MLA, the minister said that an education commission will be set up in the state on the lines of the West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission. Cabinet’s approval has been received for this. Now the approval of the cabinet will be taken regarding the introduction of the bill in the assembly. It is expected to be discussed in the cabinet meeting to be held on August 28. He appealed to the opposition to support this bill. The Education Minister told that the children of middle class families are not able to study in big private schools. In such schools, education is measured against money. In such a situation, like private hospitals, preparations are being made to crack down on schools as well. That’s why preparations are being made to present the bill in the assembly.
