The magic of General Elections extends to e-commerce platforms too

General Elections 2024: As the General Elections 2024 are approaching in India, political excitement has spread in the e-commerce sector as well. Goods related to various political parties are being seen the most on e-commerce platforms. These online platforms offer all election related products ranging from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s ‘Kamal’ to old sea clocks, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s election symbol ‘Jhadu’ and Congress’s famous Dupatta etc.

Simply enter the name of any political party on an e-commerce website, and a variety of merchandise from flags to pendants and pens will pop up on the page. A representative of an e-commerce platform said this trend initially emerged during the 2019 elections when e-commerce platforms became the preferred destination for promotional merchandise and accessories.

E-commerce Policy: Government is making national e-commerce policy, announcement soon

He said, when everything is sold online, why not this. And the sellers themselves put it on our platform and the e-commerce websites just have to check whether it follows the rules or not. In particular, some political parties themselves have been active in selling such goods on their respective websites.

For example, the ‘NaMo’ merchandise website sells T-shirts, mugs, bottles decorated with slogans such as ‘Modi’s family’, ‘Phir once again, Modi government’, ‘Modi’s guarantee’, and ‘Modi hai to mumkin hai’. It boasts of a wide range of products like notebooks, badges, wristbands, key rings, stickers, magnets, caps and pens etc.

ONDC: Whether you want to order food at home or do shopping, everything is possible on ONDC.

An attempt was made by PTI-Bhasha to seek response from Amazon India and Flipkart on this trend but no response was received from both the platforms.
However, one of the suppliers of these goods on the e-commerce platform revealed that the Lok Sabha elections saw an increase in online sales of such items.
The supplier said, earlier, our supplies were to stores, but considering the shift towards online retail platforms, we felt it was best to switch to it. Lok Sabha elections are to be held in seven phases from April 19. Counting of votes will take place on June 4.
