UP Police: Lucknow, land disputes, love affairs and minor disputes are the biggest reasons for murders in UP. 19,644 cases of murder were registered in UP between 2017 and 2021. Of these, in 11,515 cases the reasons for murder were related to land, family, mutual disputes, petty fights, illicit relations and love affairs. In the last five years, a maximum of 3,021 murders have taken place in Uttar Pradesh over land. Before Fatehpur in Deoria, the massacre that took place in Umbha village of Sonbhadra on 17 July 2019 over a land dispute had shaken the entire country. Eleven people lost their lives in firing on tribals following a dispute over land possession. After land dispute, personal rivalry is the second biggest reason for murders in UP. During the last five years, 2,165 people have been murdered in Uttar Pradesh due to personal enmity.
