It is expected that an official announcement can be made by Tata Steel today. If this happens, the company may announce layoffs at its UK plant. According to the Associated Press, the company plans to close two blast furnaces at the Port Talbot Steelworks unit. This unit is located in Wales, Britain. However, the news of layoffs has not been officially confirmed.

About 80 thousand people work

Indian company Tata Steel owns the UK’s largest steel plant with a capacity of 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), based in Port Talbot, South Wales. About 8,000 people work in it. To reduce carbon emissions, Britain’s Rishi Sunak government has announced a grant of Rs 5,150 crore to the company. The British government has given this grant to reduce carbon emissions from Tata Steel plants. In fact, Tata Steel and the British Government have jointly signed a deal to set up a high-tech electric arc furnace steel plant at the Port Talbot site with an investment of 1.25 billion pounds. For this, the British government has given a grant of about 50 crore pounds to the company.

There was discussion of firing 800 employees in Netherlands

There was a lot of discussion about Tata Steel laying off 800 people in the Netherlands in November 2023. According to a Reuters report, the company was thinking about laying off employees from the Netherlands-based unit in IJmuiden. This plant is 30 kilometers away from Amsterdam. Currently about 9200 employees work in it. The Dutch unit of Tata Steel said in this regard that the company is making many efforts to improve its position in the market and reduce costs. Despite this, something more still needs to be done. Significant investments have been made to transform Khook into an environmentally clean company. The company will invest even more in the plant in the coming days.
