Matheran is counted among the smallest hill stations of India. It is located in Raigarh district of Maharashtra. This hill station is situated at an altitude of about 2600 feet above sea level. Its distance from Mumbai is around 100 kilometers. It will be surprising to know that Matheran is the only place in the entire Asian continent which is an automobile free hill station.
Why can’t you take a car to Matheran?

From the environmental point of view, there is a ban on taking cars, auto rickshaws or any other type of vehicles to this small hill station. The government has declared it as a highly sensitive area from environmental point of view. This is the reason why there is a ban on taking a car here. Not only this, if the horn of any vehicle is heard in this area, action is taken by the Forest and Transport Department. Apart from this, making loud noises is also prohibited here.

Horse riding in Matheran
Horses are used to reach this heavenly hill station located in Raigarh district of Maharashtra. To reach Matheran via Mumbai, people first go to Louisa Point. After this, people are made to travel a distance of about 1.5 kilometers by trekking from Louisa Point and taking horse riding. Charlotte Lake is the best attraction of this area.
