Lucknow. The Supreme Court has sought a report from the Uttar Pradesh government regarding the custodial death of gangster-turned-politician mafia Atiq Ahmed and his brother former MLA Ashraf. The government has been given three weeks time to present this report. The Supreme Court has given this order to the UP government while hearing a petition filed for the demand of setting up an independent investigation committee of experts for the murder of the mafia and his brother. Even after the formation of the Yogi government in the year 2017, 183 encounters have been investigated in the state, but the bench of Justice S. Ravindra Bhat and Justice Dipankar Dutta of the Supreme Court will conduct the hearing.

The court said that we saw the incident on TV, why did the police conduct the parade

On behalf of the Uttar Pradesh government, Advocate General Mukul Rohatgi demanded the country’s Supreme Court to dismiss the petitioner’s appeal. The court asked why Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were not taken directly to the hospital in an ambulance (police vehicle). We saw the incident on TV. Why was the parade of the accused (mafia brothers) organized? On this, Mukul Rohatgi defended the UP government and said that a three-member commission has been formed under the chairmanship of a retired High Court judge to investigate the matter.

Demand to set up an independent committee headed by former judge

Describing the murder of the mafia and his brother as a state-funded crime, former IPS and Adhikar Sena President Amitabh Thakur has approached the Supreme Court. By filing a letter petition, he has appealed to the Supreme Court to monitor the matter under the supervision of the Supreme Court or the High Court. CBI inquiry should be conducted. Amitabh Thakur had also visited the spot in this matter. The court will hear next month the petition seeking to set up an independent expert committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge.

The Supreme Court sought a report in the Assad case as well.

On April 13, the STF killed Asad, son of Atiq Ahmed, wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, and his henchman Ghulam in an encounter in Jhansi. The government has to file a reply in this matter also. On April 13, Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf were shot at by three assailants posing as media persons inside the medical college for a medical checkup in Prayagraj.
