The Supreme Court today rejected the petition in which a woman had sought permission to abort her 26-week pregnancy. The Supreme Court said that the woman’s fetus is completely healthy and the medical board has confirmed this. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said that the fetus in the woman’s womb has been for more than 24 weeks and this period is beyond the maximum limit in which abortion is allowed.

It is noteworthy that on October 9, the Supreme Court had given permission to the woman for medical termination of pregnancy. Later, while hearing the petition filed by the Centre, the Supreme Court gave a divided decision and said that now the matter will be sent to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and he will decide which bench will hear the case.
The woman is in depression
In its first decision on October 9, the Supreme Court had noted that the woman was in depression and already had two children and was not in a social and economic position to raise a third child. It is known that in 2020, the Supreme Court had allowed a woman to abort her 26-week pregnancy, but the fetus was found to be suffering from a serious heart-related disease. Whereas the petition which has been rejected by the Supreme Court, both the fetus and its mother are healthy.
