Supreme Court angry over presenting wrong facts in social media

Supreme Court strict on Social Media: The Supreme Court has expressed concern over misuse of social media platforms through messages, comments and articles on matters pending in courts.

A bench of Justice Aniruddha Bose (now retired) and Justice Bela Trivedi made the remarks while initiating contempt proceedings against Assam MLA Karimuddin Barbhuiya for posting a misleading post on Facebook in a case. The decision in this matter was reserved.

The bench said, it is a matter of grave concern that these days social media platforms are being misused excessively and messages, comments, articles etc. are being posted on them in relation to cases pending in courts.

He said, although our shoulders are broad enough to bear any criticism or responsibility, but under the guise of right to freedom of expression and speech, comments or posts in the context of cases pending in the court should be seriously considered. Needs which tend to weaken the jurisdiction of the courts or interfere with the process of justice.

The bench issued a contempt notice to the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA. The next hearing in this case will be held after four weeks.
