Vespa scooter was made after World War II
Let us tell you that after the end of World War II, Vespa scooter was made for the people of Italy. This scooter was made by Italian automobile manufacturer Piaggio. This company is an Italian luxury brand manufacturing scooters and mopeds. In Italian and Latin the word Vespa is used for wasp. In recent years, Vespa’s old scooter was seen roaming on the roads of India. After this the company has launched this scooter in a new avatar. Now its electric version has been introduced in the market. In the 19th-20th century, this scooter was sold extensively in India and European countries.
Vespa was first launched in the market in the 1960s.
According to a media report, Italian automaker Piaggio first gave the license to Bajaj Auto to produce Vespa scooters in India in the 1960s. In 1971, Piaggio’s license was not renewed as a part of the privatization programs of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Even after this partnership ended, Bajaj continued to produce Chetak scooters based on Vespa’s design.
After Bajaj, LML took over from Piaggio.
Another Vespa partner in India was LML Motors. In 1983, as a joint venture with Piaggio, LML released Vespa-inspired scooters in the Indian market. In 1999, after a long dispute with Piaggio, LML bought back Piaggio’s stake and the partnership ended. Nevertheless, LML continued to produce Vespa-inspired scooters. On June 2, 2017, LML filed a bankruptcy notice and closed permanently in 2018.
Vespa scooter re-entered India in 2012
Vespa re-entered the Indian market at the 2012 Auto Expo held in New Delhi, before LML was declared bankrupt. Piaggio launched several editions of its scooters at the expo. This time Vespa did not partner with any Indian company and started releasing its own scooters in India. Now Vespa scooter is sold in five models in India, whose price ranges between Rs 1.17 lakh to Rs 1.54 lakh. Piaggio is now preparing to launch the electric edition of these scooters, which has been named Vespa Electrica. Regarding this, the company claims that it will give a mileage of up to 100 kilometers after full charging in 3.5 hours and it can reach a speed of 70 kilometers per hour.
