Rapid increase in sexual crimes against minors in Bihar, cases of human trafficking also increased

Patna. Sexual crimes against minor children are increasing in Bihar. The state police has been registering an average of 160 cases every month since August this year. Elaborating on the cases registered under the POCSO Act, ADG, Headquarters, Jitendra Singh Gangwar said that till August 31, 1,283 cases were registered in Bihar. He also said that charge sheets were filed in 1,132 cases and compensation has been paid to 490 victims.

More cases registered against minors, especially girls

Even in September and October, more cases have been registered against minors, especially girls. By August, cases in 2023 were higher than in 2022, when police registered an average of 149 cases under the POCSO Act. Police have registered a total of 1,794 cases in 38 out of 45 police districts of Bihar. However, Gangwar also claimed that the state police filed charge sheets against the accused in 1,552 cases and compensation was paid to 889 victims. Cases under the POCSO Act in 2021 averaged 125 per month, Gangwar said, adding that a total of 1,508 cases were registered at various police stations in the state and chargesheets were filed in 1,213 cases. Compensation was given to 995 victims.

Cases of human trafficking and child labor are also increasing

This year, cases of human trafficking and child labor are also increasing rapidly. Bihar Police registered an average of 22 cases every month till September this year. ADGP said that a total of 198 cases of human trafficking were registered in Bihar in the last 9 months. Gangwar said that we have rescued 215 male and 102 female victims during this period. Male victims were usually trafficked for labor jobs and most of them were minor boys, while female victims were trafficked for other activities such as prostitution and domestic help.

Bihar Police registered an average of 17 FIRs every month

In 2022, Bihar Police registered an average of 17 FIRs per month, taking the total to 207. Police rescued 507 men and 152 women from the clutches of human traffickers. In 2021, Bihar Police registered 111 FIRs under relevant sections in 12 months or 9 cases were registered every month. The state police rescued 331 men and 149 women from the clutches of human traffickers. In 2020, cases in 12 months were only 75, with 247 men and 102 women rescued.

Gang rape of 14 year old girl in Patna

On September 30, a 14-year-old girl was gang-raped by six people in a village on the outskirts of Patna. The victim had gone out to defecate when a young man kidnapped her and called his 5 friends. After the sexual brutality, the victim became unconscious and the accused ran away leaving her unattended.

Bhagalpur: Gang rape of 7th class girl

On August 28, police in Bhagalpur arrested six people for gang-raping a Class 7 girl for three days. According to the victim’s statement, she had gone to meet her friend, but the accused kidnapped her midway. They took her to a room and held her hostage for two days, taking turns to rape her. On August 25, a minor girl was raped and murdered in Samastipur district of Bihar. A young man seduced the girl, raped her and forcibly fed her poison. The victim was found unconscious at the spot in her own village under Mufassil police station. The victim’s family admitted her to Sadar Hospital Samastipur where the doctors referred her to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for better treatment. He died during treatment on 28 August.
