The secretary said that around 1,343 personnel from central and state government agencies including Navy, Air Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), state disaster response forces are involved in the rescue and relief operations.

About 17,000 people in relief camps

Shivdas Meena said, “So far we have set up 160 relief camps and about 17,000 people have been kept in these relief camps. About 34,000 food packets have been distributed to the people and even now, we are not able to reach even some villages. “We have been able to reach there because the water level has not gone down yet.” The Secretary said that nine helicopters have been deployed for relief work and through them, 13,500 kg of food items have been delivered to the stranded people.

Efforts continue to save 800 passengers stranded in Srivaikuntam

According to the information received, efforts are underway to save about 800 passengers stranded in Srivaikuntam in southern Tamil Nadu and this work will be completed as soon as possible. The Army is also helping in evacuating people from flood affected areas and providing them medical facilities. Although rains have almost stopped in most parts of southern Tamil Nadu, people are still facing problems due to the effects of floods. A railway official said that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Air Force, Railways and local administration are making coordinated efforts for rescue operations. The stranded passengers spent the night in train compartments at Srivaikuntam railway station since the early hours of Monday. 300 people were given shelter in a nearby school and others were at Srivaikuntam railway station.

About 200 boats deployed as part of rescue operation
