Delhi’s chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has demanded the restoration of fare concessions given by the Railways to senior citizens. Kejriwal has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding this.

No one can develop without blessings of elders: Kejriwal

Arvind Kejriwal said in a letter to PM Modi, no person or society can develop without the blessings of elders. Kejriwal said that the budget of the Center is Rs 45 lakh crore and if concessions are given to senior citizens, then Rs 1600 crore will be spent on it. Describing this amount as a drop in the ocean, he said that by saving this amount, the government will not become rich.

Kejriwal termed the abolition of concession in rail fare for the elderly as unfortunate.

Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that for the past many years the elderly train journey I was getting a discount of up to 50 percent and it is unfortunate that it has been abolished. He said, please do not stop the concessions given to the elderly in the railways. Crores of elders were getting its benefit.

Delhi government spends Rs 50 crore on pilgrimage for the elderly

Kejriwal said that the Delhi government spends Rs 50 crore on the pilgrimage of the elderly in the annual budget. Attacking the Modi government, he said, by stopping the concession in rail fare, senior citizens are getting a message that the government does not care about them, which is against the culture of the country.

It’s not about money, it’s about intention: Kejriwal

Kejriwal said, it is not a matter of money. It is a matter of intention. If the Delhi government spends 50 crores from its budget on the pilgrimage of the elderly, then the Delhi government would not have become poor. In order to discourage the movement of people to overcome Kovid-19 in 2020, the central government stopped the concessions being given to senior citizens.

After March 20, 2020, the concession in rail fare to senior citizens has been discontinued.

Indian Railways used to give 40 percent concession in train fares to men above 60 years of age and 50 percent to women above 58 years of age. These concessions were withdrawn on March 20, 2020. The Railways, however, has said that it has no immediate plans to resume the concessions.
