SIT will investigate the matter

Speaking to the media here, Ludhiana Police Commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu said that the SIT will be headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation) Harmeet Singh Hundal. He said that the team will investigate whether any industrial unit has dumped garbage in the sewer line. Sidhu said that the police will seek the cooperation of the Punjab Pollution Control Board on this and if its officials do not cooperate, action will be taken against them as well.

NDRF started cleanup drive

He told that the team of National NDRF and Municipal Corporation assessed the ambient air quality in the area overnight. He said, “Hydrogen sulfide is no longer found in the air.” The teams also checked the manholes of the area from time to time. “During the night, the level of hydrogen sulphide in the manhole was high, but it has gone down after the chemical decontamination process,” he said.

Industrial body feared gas leak

The Deputy Commissioner said that the team of Pollution Control Board is doing mapping to check the water entry and exit of the industries located in the area. He said that the cordon radius has also been reduced from 250 meters to 25 meters after the air quality was found to be fine. After the gas leak, the authorities cordoned off the area on Sunday. Meanwhile, a Ludhiana-based industry body feared “harassment” by some government departments for the gas leak tragedy.
