Pollution increasing rapidly in Jamshedpur, administration ignoring NGT orders

Jamshedpur, Brajesh Singh : Environmental rules are being continuously violated in iron city Jamshedpur, due to which the pace of pollution is increasing. But till now the administration has not taken any concrete steps regarding this. Machines for checking AQI (Air Quality Index) levels have also been stopped, due to which pollution in the air is not being detected. The water of rivers is also becoming poisonous. At the same time, no steps have been taken by the administration to save trees. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had given three major orders recently. The administration is ignoring these orders. Till now there is no concrete solution or even murmur regarding this.

Case 1: Removal of concrete or tiles from around trees.

In Jamshedpur, a network of tiles and concrete has been laid around the roots of trees. Environment lover Awadhesh Pandey had filed a petition against this in NGT. NGT had ordered that the administration remove concrete and tiles from around the trees, but no work was done. They were asked to file an affidavit in compliance with the order by September 11. A committee was formed, in which apart from the Deputy Commissioner, Special Officer of Jamshedpur Axis, DFO Jamshedpur, Senior Scientist of Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board were included. The committee took action at some places and took photographs.

Case 2: No concrete steps were taken regarding dumping dirty water in the river.

In March, NGT had constituted a high level expert committee in the matter of drains releasing water without treatment in Subarnarekha river in and around Jamshedpur. In this, representatives of ACS Environment, Jharkhand Government, representative of Central Pollution Control Board, representative of the office of Integrated Pollution Control Board of Ranchi and DC of Jamshedpur were included. The committee was asked to conduct the investigation and submit a fact finding report within 15 days. A report was definitely sent regarding this, in which it was said that there was no pollution caused by Tata Steel and Tata Motors. Even today 18 drains are being drained into rivers.

Case 3: Dumping of garbage in Sonari Yard, no arrangement for recycling

Jamshedpur Axis had given the contract to Guru Ramdas Construction to eliminate the garbage dump located at Sonari Marine Drive within six months through bio-mining and resource recovery. But it has not been decided that if dumping of waste in Sonari stops, then where will the dumping of waste take place? Dumping of waste from Mango Municipal Corporation and Jamshedpur Access takes place in Sonari. About 387.98 metric tonnes of garbage is generated daily from the population of about 10 lakh in both the municipal bodies, while on an average 0.59 kg garbage is generated per person. A new place for shifting the waste has not been decided yet. In such a situation, there is doubt whether a permanent solution to the waste will be found in six months. According to Jamshedpur Access, a park will be built at the dumping site of Sonari. Time has also been taken in NGT. It has been given in writing that dumping of waste in Sonari will be stopped. But no concrete steps have been taken. As a result, garbage is being dumped there.
