PIL filed in Calcutta High Court in Rajiv Sinha’s appointment case, hearing to be held next week

A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Calcutta High Court challenging the validity of the appointment of Rajeev Sinha as the State Election Commissioner of West Bengal. The case has been filed by advocate Nabendu Banerjee on Monday i.e. today. The matter is likely to be heard by the Chief Justice’s bench next Friday. A PIL filed in the Calcutta High Court states that the appointment made by Governor CV Anand Bose on June 7 was illegal.

Rajiv Sinha’s name was proposed by the state secretariat

The name of Rajiv Sinha, the former chief secretary of the state, was first proposed by the state secretariat for the post of state election commissioner. However, earlier this proposal was not approved in the Raj Bhavan. Two more names were sent by the state secretariat. However, later Governor CV Anand Bose agreed to appoint Rajeev Sinha to the post of State Election Commissioner. On the other hand, a tussle has come to the fore between the Governor and Mamta Banerjee regarding the appointment of the State Election Commissioner.

Rajiv Sinha’s appointment was declared illegal

Significantly, on June 7, the Governor had appointed Rajiv Sinha as the State Election Commissioner. Rajeev Sinha’s appointment as State Election Commissioner has been opposed since the beginning. Especially on the appointment of Rajeev Sinha, BJP has expressed ‘objection’ from the beginning. Opposition leader Shubhendu Adhikari did not hesitate to attack the Governor regarding this. In such a situation, the Governor sent back the joining report of Rajiv last Wednesday, due to which the politics of the state got heated. Significantly, the matter is likely to be heard by the Chief Justice’s bench on next Friday. The court has sought answers from all the parties in this matter.
