The first parliamentary elections were held in independent India in the year 1952. This year Babu Ramnarayan Singh won from here. Ramnarayan Singh defeated Giani Ram of Congress Party and was elected the first MP from Hazaribagh Lok Sabha seat. Gandhi’s follower Babu Ramnarayan Singh had contested the elections as an independent candidate.
In the year 1957, when the Lok Sabha elections were held for the second time in the country, the Janata Party made Lalita Raj Lakshmi its candidate for Hazaribagh Lok Sabha seat. He defeated Badrujaman Khan of Congress Party. In this way, the Congress candidate, who had won at most places in the country, had to face defeat here for the second time.
In the 1962 Lok Sabha elections, the party of the candidate elected as MP changed, but the party of the candidate who stood second was again Congress. Dr. Basant Narayan Singh was elected the third MP of Hazaribagh on the ticket of Raja’s Janata Party. He defeated Jamal Ansari of Congress.
In the general elections of the country held in the year 1967, Dr. Basant Narayan Singh of Raja’s Janata Party once again contested from Hazaribagh seat. This time Congress made Damodar Pandey its candidate. Dr. Basant Narayan Singh also defeated Damodar Pandey.
In the year 1968, by-elections were held on Hazaribagh Lok Sabha seat and Raja’s Janata Party candidate once again defeated the Congress. This time the Janata Party candidate was Mohan Singh Oberoi, who later opened the chain of Oberoi Hotels. However, in the 1968 elections he defeated Ramnarayan Sharma of Congress.
In the year 1971, Congress Party won Hazaribagh Lok Sabha seat for the first time. Party candidate Damodar Pandey won this seat by defeating Raja’s Janata Party candidate Rajmata Lalita Raj Lakshmi.
Ten years later, in the year 1977, Dr. Basant Narayan Singh contested the elections on the ticket of Raja’s Janata Party and snatched the Hazaribagh Lok Sabha seat from the Congress. This time he defeated Damodar Pandey of Congress and again reached the Lok Sabha.
In the year 1980, Dr. Basant Narayan Singh won the Hazaribagh parliamentary seat for the second consecutive time on Raja’s Janata Party ticket. This time he defeated Azima Hussain of Congress Party.
When Lok Sabha elections were held in 1984 after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Damodar Pandey won this seat for the Congress Party. This time, Bhuvneshwar Mehta of Communist Party of India (CPI) stood second in Hazarabeeg Lok Sabha seat.
In the year 1989, both Congress and Janata Party disappeared from the scene. This time Yadunath Pandey won Hazaribagh Lok Sabha seat on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. He hoisted the saffron flag here for the first time after defeating CPI MP Bhuvneshwar Mehta.
In the year 1991, BJP once again made Yadunath Pandey its candidate, but this time he was defeated by senior CPI leader and former MP Bhuvneshwar Mehta in Hazaribagh parliamentary seat.
In the year 1996, BJP made Mahavirlal Vishwakarma its candidate against CPI’s Bhuvneshwar Mehta. Mahavirlal Vishwakarma defeated Bhubaneswar.
In the year 1998, BJP gave ticket to bureaucrat-turned-politician Yashwant Sinha. He also defeated CPI candidate Bhuvaneshwar Mehta.
Yashwant Sinha won once again in the year 1999. This time, instead of CPI’s Bhuvneshwar Mehta, he was facing Lalu Prasad Yadav’s party Rashtriya Janata Dal on Hazaribagh parliamentary seat. RJD had made Aklu Ram its candidate here, but he could not stand in front of Yashwant Sinha.
In the year 2004, when BJP was contesting elections riding on the chariot of India Shining and Feel Good, a strong leader like Yashwant Sinha was defeated by CPI’s Bhuvneshwar Mehta.
In the year 2009, Yashwant Sinha once again contested elections from here on BJP ticket. He also registered victory. This time Yashwant Sinha became MP by defeating Saurabh Narayan Singh of Congress Party.
In the year 2014, BJP gave ticket to his son Jayant Sinha in place of Yashwant Sinha. Yashwant Sinha saved his father’s legacy and won. This time his competition was with Saurabh Narayan Singh.
In the year 2019, once again Yashwant Sinha’s son Jayant Sinha contested the elections on BJP ticket and defeated Gopal Sahu of Congress by a huge margin of more than four lakh votes.
