PHOTO: 22 lakh vehicles running without PUC certificate in Delhi, action taken against only 2.4 lakh

New Delhi : In India’s capital Delhi, the climate has become very bad due to poisonous smoke emanating from vehicles. Due to continuous fluctuations in Air Quality Index (AQI), people’s health is being adversely affected. Delhi’s Arvind Kejriwal government blames the smoke emitted from ICE engine vehicles running on petrol and diesel for the increase in pollution in the city’s air. Meanwhile, a shocking revelation has come to light. That is, more than 22 lakh vehicles in Delhi are running on the city roads without pollution certificate (PUC certificate). What is even more shocking is that out of such a large number of polluting vehicles, action has been taken against only 2.4 lakh vehicle owners.

19 lakh two wheelers are spreading pollution

According to media reports, out of about 22 lakh vehicles spewing poisonous smoke on the roads of Delhi, more than 19 lakh are two-wheelers. The report said that till November 15 this year, the Delhi Transport Department has taken action against only 2.4 lakh polluting vehicles. The remaining vehicles are still spewing poisonous smoke on the roads of Delhi.

97 lakh vehicles registered in Delhi

At present around 97 lakh four wheelers and two wheelers are registered in Delhi. These include about 27.8 lakh cars. These cars include 8.4 lakh CNG and 2.5 lakh electric cars. Whereas 69.8 lakh two-wheelers are registered. The surprising thing is that two-wheeler drivers are violating the maximum rules regarding pollution certificate.

Two wheelers do not have pollution certificate

According to Delhi Transport Department data, around 19 lakh two-wheelers in the city do not have pollution certificates. At the same time, the owners of about three lakh four wheelers do not have pollution certificates. There is a provision to impose a fine of at least Rs 10,000 against drivers without pollution certificate.

More action during the three years to 2023

In the year 2023, maximum action has been taken against vehicle owners who do not have pollution certificates in the last three years. In the year 2020, action was taken against one lakh vehicles without pollution certificate, while in the year 2021, fine was imposed on 1.5 lakh vehicles. Whereas in the year 2022, challans have been issued against two lakh vehicles and till November 15 this year, challans have been issued against 2.4 lakh vehicles.
