People living on footpaths are not ready to go to shelter home, creating headache for Ranchi Municipal Corporation

Ranchi, Uttam Mahato: Despite the severe cold in the capital Ranchi, 60 to 65 people are not ready to leave the footpath. These people are spending the night wearing sacks. They were rescued five times by the Municipal Corporation and brought to the shelter home, but even before morning, these people run away and reach the footpath. These people spend the night around Albert Ekka Chowk and Shaheed Chowk on the main road. Due to repeatedly running away from the shelter home despite warnings, the Municipal Corporation has now requested the Sadar SDO to provide forces and magistrates to take action against such people.

  • The corporation team rescued them five times and brought them to the shelter home, but they ran away and came back to the footpath.

  • The corporation requested the Sadar SDO to provide forces and magistrates to take action against them.

There are 12 shelter homes in Ranchi city.

To ensure that people do not spend the night under the open sky, Ranchi Municipal Corporation is running shelter homes at 12 places in the city. One woman and one man are being run at Atal Smriti Vendor Market, Kantatoli Chowk, Bakri Bazaar, RIMS, Madhukam, AG Mod, Karbala Chowk and shelter near Jagannath Temple. There are free facilities including bed, blanket, pillow and drinking water. But, despite having so many facilities, these people do not want to live in the corporation’s shelter home. When the corporation team forcibly brings them to the shelter home in a vehicle, these people argue that if the corporation is so concerned then a shelter home should be constructed in Albert Ekka Chowk itself. We are not going anywhere leaving this place.

Not leaving the footpath due to the greed of blanket

Municipal Corporation employees say that at night a large number of people associated with social and religious activities reach Ranchi’s famous Albert Ekka Chowk. Here, seeing them sleeping on the footpath covered in sacks, they also give them blankets, food and money. At the same time, many people also come here on anniversaries and birthdays of their children with blankets in vehicles to do social service. From here also they get blankets, food and money. That’s why these people do not want to leave the footpath.
