Online Gaming: The government has issued an advisory against betting and gambling. Social media influencers have been cautioned against promoting online betting and gambling platforms. Advisory has been issued regarding ban on advertising, promotion and support of illegal activities including betting and gambling.

The government has warned social media influencers against promoting online betting and gambling platforms. The government on Thursday warned social media influencers and their followers to refrain from promoting or advertising foreign online betting and gambling platforms.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has said in an advisory that these advertisements have a significant financial and socio-economic impact of online betting and gambling on consumers, especially the youth.

An official statement said that the ministry has advised online advertising intermediaries not to target Indian audiences with such promotional material. The statement said that social media intermediaries have also been advised to run awareness initiatives against such content among users.

PTI language report said that according to the statement, it has been warned that if it is not complied with, action can be taken under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. This includes removal or deactivation of social media posts or accounts and punitive action under laws.
