One dead in fight between two tigers in Valmiki Tiger Reserve

While patrolling in Mangurahon forest area under Forest Division 1 of Bihar’s only Valmiki Tiger Reserve, forest personnel found a male tiger dead. There were fight marks on the tiger’s neck and back. After which the forest personnel immediately informed the senior officials about this matter. On receiving the information, Forest Conservator-cum-Area Director Dr. Neshamani K., Forest Divisional Officer-cum-Deputy Director Division-1 Pradumna Gaurav and Veterinary Officer reached the spot and inspected the dead tiger and the incident site.

Fight between two tigers in territorial dispute

As per the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), the post-mortem of the dead tiger was conducted on 25 March 2024 in the presence of all forest officials, local committee members and forest personnel. After preliminary investigation and examination of the incident site, it is suspected that the death of the male tiger was due to a bloody clash with another male tiger over a territorial dispute. The second tiger is also being searched.

Forest department team is investigating

Forest personnel believe that the second tiger has also suffered serious injuries. The age of the dead tiger is said to be seven years. The Forest Department is conducting a detailed investigation into this matter. Search is going on for another tiger in the forest. The investigation report will be prepared and sent to senior officials. The people nearby were frightened by the roaring noise during the tiger fight.

How many tigers are there in Valmiki Tiger Reserve?

VTR Valmiki Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over 880 square kilometers. According to official figures, there are a total of 54 tigers in Valmiki Tiger Reserve. The total number of tigers here in the year 2018 was 31 and in 2014 it was only 28.
