This tunnel project is considered to be very important from a strategic point of view as the highway is closed due to heavy snowfall in winter, due to which the Ladakh region is cut off from the Kashmir Valley. The Zojila tunnel will connect Baltal in Ganderbal district of Kashmir with the miniway in Drass town of Kargil district in Ladakh. There is an 18 kilometer long approach road from Sonamarg to Baltal while the length of the main tunnel is 13 kilometer.

People working in minus 26 degree Celsius

Referring to the Zojila tunnel, Gadkari said that the estimated cost of the project was Rs 12,000 crore, but after discussions with experts and international consultants, it was possible to reduce the cost by Rs 5,000 crore. He said, this is the first time for our country that we are going to save Rs 5,000 crore in the estimated cost of a project. It is very difficult to work here. People are working in minus 26 degree Celsius.

38 percent work of tunnel completed

Gadkari said that 38 percent work of this tunnel has been completed and a part of this project will be inaugurated this year to give relief to the common people. He said that after the completion of the project, tourism will get a boost in the entire area.

Total length of the project 31 km

Harpal Singh, project head of Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL), the company that constructed the Zojila tunnel, said that its work is going on at full speed. Singh said, the total length of this project from Sonamarg to Minimarg is 31 km. The route from Sonamarg to Baltal is 18 km long and then the main tunnel from Baltal to Minimarg is 13 km long. Work is going on fast on both the projects.
