History of Benelli

Benelli was founded in 1911 in Pesaro, Italy, possibly making it the oldest of the Italian motorcycle factories in operation. (Moto Guzzi – the oldest motorcycle factory with non-stop operation – was established in 1921, and Peugeot is the world’s oldest still-producing motorcycle factory, founded in 1898.) After losing her husband, the widowed Teresa Boni Benelli invested all of the family’s wealth in the business, in the hope that it would be passed on to her six sons: Giuseppe, Giovanni, Francesco, Filippo, Domenico and Antonio. (“Tonino”). He also sent Giuseppe and Giovanni to Switzerland to study engineering. Initially, apart from 5 brothers, 6 employees worked in the business.

In the beginning, it was just the Benelli garage

In the beginning, it was just a Benelli garage that repaired bicycles and motorcycles, but was already capable of producing all the spare parts needed for repairs. During the First World War, Benelli worked hard to recover parts for the Italian machines in the war, and in 1919 the first motorcycle was presented to the public. In 1920 the company built its first complete engine in-house, a single-cylinder two-stroke 75 cc model, which was quickly adapted to a bicycle frame. A year later in 1921, Benelli built its first motorcycle, which by then had become a 98 cc model, using its own engine.

Benelli made the most successful engine in 1927

But the most successful engine, which made Benelli known nationally and internationally, was the 175 cm³ 4-stroke of 1927 with “cascade” distribution and overhead camshaft, a bold and sophisticated solution that soon became a “trademark” of the Pesaro house. Giuseppe Benelli was inspired by a theoretical study of an engine by Edward Turner published in the French magazine Moto Revue in 1925. To beat the competition, Giuseppe wasted no time and completely reinterpreted that project, offering an ingeniously simple solution to eliminate the negative effects of thermal expansion affecting these applications.
