National Thesaurus Day 2023: Today is Thesaurus Day (Synonyms Day). Synonyms have incredible importance in every language and dialect. These words enhance beauty and elegance in language and dialect. Today, January 18, is the birthday of Peter Mark Roget, who started the book “Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases Classified and Arranged So as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition”. His highly useful creation is celebrated as National Thesaurus Day 2023 on 18th January.

Whenever we need the right word to express our thoughts in a passage or conversation, our fingers often wander in search of synonyms and antonyms, thesaurus, a website with millions of results.

Many members of this digital decade may not know but the thesaurus was a book before it was a top website. Thanks to Peter Marc Roget who started the book in 1848 and finished it in 1852 with more than 15,000 words. His highly useful creation is celebrated as National Thesaurus Day on 18 January.

What is a thesaurus?

  • First recorded in English, the word thesaurus was coined in 1730 and originates from the Greek thesaurus, meaning “storehouse,” “treasury,” or “treasury.”

  • Thesaurus is now the leading online thesaurus and a favorite website for writers, students and professionals.

  • Peter Marc Roget is credited with being the author of the first thesaurus and popularizing the modern meaning of the word. January 18 is also Rosette’s birthday.

  • He titled the book “Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases Classified and Arranged So as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition”.
