Monsoon: There will be heavy rain this year, IMD predicts

Monsoon: IMD said, except some areas of North-West, East and North-Eastern states, more than normal rainfall is expected in most parts of the country. IMD chief Mrityunjay Mohapatra said in the press conference that the monsoon seasonal rainfall is likely to be 106 percent of the long term average (LPA) between June 1 and September 30 under the 2024 south-west monsoon across the country. He said that if the rainfall is between 96 percent to 104 percent of the long term average of seasonal rainfall then it is normal.

106 percent rainfall falls in the category of above normal

The IMD chief said that 106 per cent rainfall falls in the category of above normal and if the rainfall is between 105 per cent to 110 per cent of the long period average then it is considered above normal. Mahapatra said that the long term average of seasonal rainfall in the entire country is 87 cm.

La Nina conditions will develop between August-September

Mrityunjay Mohapatra (Director General, IMD) said, La Nina conditions related to good monsoon in India are likely to be active by August-September.
