Manipur Violence: There is anger in the whole country over the incident of making women roam naked in Manipur. Here the police is also engaged in arresting the accused regarding the incident. In this episode, the police have arrested two more accused. After this, the number of people arrested in the case has increased to 6. The arrested accused also include the person who is seen dragging a woman in the viral video. Police said that by raiding several suspected hideouts, all possible efforts are being made to arrest the remaining criminals. On the other hand, the Manipur Police has said regarding the arrest that on May 4, another accused was arrested today in connection with the viral video of two women. A total of six people, including five main accused and a juvenile, have been caught or arrested in the case so far.
Two women raped, murdered in Manipur
Here in Manipur, apart from stripping two women and making them roam on the road, a case of alleged rape and then murder of two other women has come to the fore. This incident is of May 4. There is no mention of any section related to sexual harassment of both in the FIR lodged by the Manipur Police in this case. Instead, only a case of robbery, mischief and trespass has been registered. Zero FIR was registered by the police on May 16 on the complaint of the mother of one of the victims at Saikul police station in Kangpopki district, 35 km from the spot. An official said that since it is a zero FIR, other sections can be added once the probe into the matter starts. When a police station receives a complaint of such a crime, which is outside its jurisdiction, then that police station registers a zero FIR.
1. There was a crowd of 100 to 200 people – the victim’s mother
At the same time, the victim’s mother claimed that on May 4, 100 to 200 unidentified people allegedly belonging to the majority community tortured her besides raping her daughter and her friend. Then brutally murdered both of them. Both the girls worked at a car cleaning shop and lived in a rented house at Konung Mamang in Imphal East. The bodies of both have not yet been handed over to their families. Probably the bodies have been kept in a hospital in Imphal Valley. His family has not been able to reach there due to ethnic conflict in the state.
2. The victim’s husband has participated in the Kargil war
Explain that the husband of one of the two women paraded naked by a mob in Manipur and a former army personnel who took part in the Kargil war, regretted that he protected the country, but he could not save his wife from being humiliated. The video of this incident with women on May 4 surfaced on Wednesday, after which there is anger across the country. The husband of one of the victims has served as a Subedar in the Assam Regiment of the Indian Army.
3. Security and order in the state
Manipur Police and Central forces have beefed up security in the state to prevent any untoward incident in the wake of videos surfaced of desecration of women. Police said that security personnel are raiding several suspected locations. Apart from this, aerial surveillance has also been intensified. Police said that the security personnel are making every possible effort to arrest the remaining accused in the incident by raiding several suspected hideouts.
4. Demand for strict action against the accused
Here, after the video of vandalism with two women surfaced, women’s rights activists of the northeastern states demanded strict action against the accused. Mizoram State Women’s Commission, Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society and Naga Mothers’ Association have also written to the National Commission for Women and Manipur Government demanding immediate justice for both the women and creating a safe environment for all women.
5. Two more arrested in Kangpokpi case
On May 4, the police arrested two people, including a teenager, in Kangpokpi district for parading two women naked. So far six people have been arrested in this case. These include the man who was seen in a public video dragging a woman in Bi Phanom village. The police is busy arresting the rest of the criminals by raiding several suspected locations.
6. Center will place facts in Parliament – Rijiju
In this matter, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has said that the Central Government will present the facts in Parliament on the incident in Manipur. At the same time, in Kochi, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has demanded the hanging of the accused arrested in connection with the incident of making women parade naked. Talking to the media, the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment said that the Central Government is seriously looking into the situation in Manipur. Appealing to various communities in Manipur to maintain peace, he said incidents of atrocities against women in the northeastern state are a matter of grave concern. He also said that Manipur is a sensitive issue and the Government of India is considering it very seriously. Atrocities against women is a serious issue. Many people are burning houses..we appeal to all communities to maintain peace. Athawale said that I appeal to both the sides, maintain peace. We don’t want violence there, we want peace.
7. Opposition parties will protest outside Parliament on Monday
Amid deadlock in Parliament over the debate on Manipur violence, MPs from various opposition parties have planned a protest near Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Parliament premises on Monday to press for the Prime Minister’s statement on the issue in both Houses. The opposition has accused the government that the government is adopting such tactics to avoid discussion in the parliament on the issue of violence in Manipur. The government has agreed to hold a short-term discussion on the Manipur issue with the Union Home Minister’s reply, but the opposition is demanding the Prime Minister’s statement first. The opposition has stuck to this demand after the video of two women being paraded naked and assaulted in a village in Manipur surfaced on social media.
8. CM Hemant Soren wrote a letter to the President
Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren has expressed grief over Manipur violence and atrocities against women. She wrote a letter to President Draupadi Murmu expressing grief over the unspeakable atrocities against women in violence-hit Manipur and urged him to take steps to ensure peace in the northeastern state. A few days after the video surfaced of women being paraded naked in Manipur, Soren said in the letter that the country cannot allow the barbaric treatment of tribals in Manipur. Soren has said, silence in the face of brutality is a terrible crime, so I am compelled to write to you with a heavy heart and deep pain at the violence in Manipur today. I am deeply distressed and concerned about the deteriorating condition of Manipur, unspeakable atrocities and sexual exploitation against women.
9. Heinous crimes against women more in Rajasthan, Bengal, Bihar – BJP
Amid continuous attack from the opposition over the Manipur violence, the BJP has alleged that the list of heinous crimes against women in opposition-ruled states like Rajasthan, West Bengal and Bihar is long but the opposition parties are playing politics over the incident in Manipur. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur, while talking to the media, attacked the opposition parties fiercely. He referred to some criminal cases registered against women in Rajasthan, Bihar and West Bengal and accused Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and leaders of other opposition parties of keeping silence on crimes against women in non-BJP ruled states. Thakur alleged that more than one lakh cases of crime against women have been registered in Rajasthan in the last four years. A total of 33 thousand cases are related to sexual harassment of women in Rajasthan.
10. Swati Maliwal stopped from visiting Manipur
Here, Delhi Women’s Commission Chairperson Swati Maliwal has alleged that the Manipur government has denied permission to travel to the state to meet women victims of sexual harassment. Maliwal, today i.e. on 23rd July was going to go on Northeast tour. The Delhi Commission for Women chief on Friday wrote a letter to the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) about her visit after a video surfaced of two women being paraded naked in Manipur. Maliwal had also written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urging him to take steps in this matter.
