Mangal Pandey joined the British Army at the age of 22. He was part of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry (BNI), a regiment under the British India Company’s army.

They rebelled against the East India Company when they issued cartridges that were allegedly laced with the fat of cows and pigs. This was insulting to the religious beliefs of Hindus and Muslims of the country.

In 1857, Mangal Pandey led a rebellion against the British, also known as the First War of Indian Independence or the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857.

Mangal Pandey attacked two British officers on March 29, 1857. After this, he was hanged at Barrackpore on April 8, 1857.

However, Pandey’s attack on British officials proved to be an inspiration. Later, a rebellion broke out in Meerut which ultimately led to the Revolt of 1857.
