Senate Hall clock will again tell the time to the city residents

The clock in the Senate Hall in the Arts Faculty of Allahabad University (IVV) will tell the time to the city residents again. The university has received a grant of Rs 15 crore from the Higher Education Financing Agency (HIFA) for the renovation of the Senate Hall and the clock on its tower. On January 26, Vice Chancellor Prof. Sangeeta Srivastava announced this. The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) had submitted its report to the IU administration in February 2008 for the restoration of four historical buildings of the university, Vizianagaram Hall, Senate Hall, Darbhanga Hall and the English Department, as part of a survey. In 2019, the then Vice Chancellor Prof. Hanglu had got the painting work done inside the Senate Hall but the clock on the tower of the Senate Hall could not be started. Meanwhile, PRO of IVV, Prof. Jaya Kapoor told that the tower of the Senate Hall and the clock on it will be repaired with the grant received from HIFA. The specially designed tiles and wood on the ceiling of the Senate Hall have also been damaged, which will be replaced. Broken glass of windows and broken tiles of the stage will also be replaced. The building will be strengthened while maintaining its original form. Former Chairman of the Department of Medieval and Modern History of IVV, Prof. Yogeshwar Tiwari tells that once upon a time this clock used to tell the time to the city residents. Whenever there was time, the bell of this clock would ring as often as possible and its sound would travel far. People used to know the time by listening to the sound of the bell and this clock used to decide the daily routine of the people of the city.

Sir Swinton Jacob had prepared the outline of the building

Let us tell you that Sir Swinton Jacob, appointed as Surveyor and Engineer in the Bombay Artillery of the British Army in 1858, designed the main building of the University, the Senate Hall, in the land acquired by Allahabad University (Faculty of Arts) between 1908 and 1912, in Rajput and Mughal style. I had prepared. A grand clock was also installed on the tower of this building, which Sir Jacob took inspiration from the Big-Ban clock company of London. The clock tower of the Senate Hall was ready in 1912.
