Lok Sabha Election2024 Number of candidates increased four and a half times in Bihar in 67 years

Lok Sabha Election 2024 In the general elections held in 1952, 198 candidates had participated in Bihar, whereas in 2019 this number had increased to 902. That means, in the last 67 years, the number of people contesting Lok Sabha elections in the state has increased by four and a half times. If we talk about the entire country, then in the general elections held in 1952, 1874 candidates had contested, whereas in 2019 this number had increased to 8039. In this way, here too the number of candidates has increased four times. According to the analysis, during these 67 years, the average number of candidates contesting on each Lok Sabha seat has also increased from 3.83 to 14.8. This analysis has been done on the basis of data from the Election Commission of India.

The record of year 1996 was not broken

The record of the number of candidates contesting elections in Bihar in 1996 has not been broken till date. A total of 1448 candidates had contested in Bihar in the 11th Lok Sabha. After that this number started showing a decline. At the national level, the number of candidates in this election had crossed 10,000. In the year 1996, 13952 candidates contested elections on 543 Lok Sabha seats across the country. Due to this the average of candidate and seat increased directly to 25.69.

Candidates decreased as security amount increased

In the year 1998, the Election Commission changed the rules to give a chance to only serious candidates in the elections. Under this change, the security deposit required to contest elections was increased from Rs 500 to Rs 10,000. Due to this, the number of candidates contesting elections merely for popularity started decreasing. In the 1998 Lok Sabha elections, the number of candidates in Bihar came down to 469. At the national level too, the average came down to 8.75 compared to 25.69 in the last election, while the number of people contesting the elections also remained below 5000. The number of candidates in Bihar in 1996 was 1448. However, in the 1998 elections this number came down to 469.

After the bifurcation of Bihar, the number of seats decreased.

In Bihar, the number of people contesting elections started increasing again in the year 2004. This election was the first election after the division of Bihar in 2000. The number of Lok Sabha seats in Bihar reduced to 40. 462 candidates contested the 14th Lok Sabha elections in 2004, 708 in 2009, 607 in 2014 and 902 in 2019. That means the trend of increasing number of candidates has started. In 2004, 5435 candidates contested the elections in the country, due to which the average of candidates and seats again increased to beyond 10. At the same time, in 2009 the number of candidates reached 8000. In the year 2014, the number of candidates contesting the elections was 8251, whereas in 2019 this number decreased slightly to 8039.
